Visiting Fellow

Lecture on ‘ugly paintings’

Reinhold Heller, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, gave a lecture in the Van Gogh Museum about 'ugly paintings'. He addressed the question of why The Potato Eaters by Van Gogh and The Scream by Munch, for example, are perceived as ugly. Heller stayed in the Netherlands for a week, at the invitation of the Van Gogh Museum and the University of Amsterdam, in order to lead a seminar about Munch and Van Gogh as a visiting fellow. This seminar was intended for students and for employees of the Van Gogh Museum. The lecture was open to the public, and proved very popular.
